TAWNEY IS NOW AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION
Earlier this weekend we posted about a couple superhero dogs we have that are partaking in physical therapy with Beth at K9 Wellness Center. This post focuses on Tawney who is a gorgeous, 8ish month old French Bulldog who has special
As you can see from these pictures, Tawney's adorable face is no doubt capturing the hearts of many as they read this. We get it. Oh boy, do we get it! Before you apply, please understand that Tawney needs a human equally as special as she is. Tawney has spina bifida and some knee issues. Tawney can and will live a wonderful and happy life. We appreciate your empathy for her. Your empathy is a show of compassion and compassion is a cornerstone of animal rescue.
What we really need -- what she really needs -- is someone who is willing to see her as she sees herself -- she is a happy doggo that wants to do dog things and sometimes needs a little help. We can promise you that we too, when seeing or meeting a new special needs dog, have a moment of feeling sorry for them and we honor that moment of sadness. But, and here's the rub, we see them very, very quickly acclimate to our foster homes and our fosters regularly comment than in short order, their disability becomes secondary to the dog's personality, and after the slight adjustments in routine to care for these superhero dogs, it becomes normal. It really does. And we are passionate about encouraging people to consider and try because we see the beauty these dogs ultimately and always add to their owners lives and everyone they meet.
Tawney will need to wear a diaper due to her medical condition. A little secret for you... it's not uncommon to hear fosters say diaper dogs are less of a challenge when it comes to common potty issues. That's not a joke. We're serious. Accidents for the most part are one thing you don't have to worry about with diapers. Also, Frenchies can wear baby diapers (no tail hole needed), so that can keep costs down and we can tell you where to find the best deals.
She wobbles when she walks. When she first came to us she wasn't walking. That tells you something about her tenacity and will. What a wonderful thing to witness and be reminded each day. Check the comments for this post to see video.
You'll need to keep her safe by avoiding jumping on or off furniture. It's very common for even able Frenchies to use ramps. It's good practice with the breed regardless and we often recommend ramps for breeds like Doxies or Frenchies who are prone to back issues. Tawney will need a ramp.
Tawney's foster mom is one our special needs fosters who has a wealth of experience, and is ready to answer all your questions. There are other fosters, too, ready to support, educate, listen and help in any way all of our adopters really, but in particular new special needs adopters. We know you will see that it's more doable than you might think.
Not so bad, right? Sometimes a change in perspective is all it takes to see the hidden gems these dogs are and represent.
And to those of you reading this that have special needs dogs, we encourage you to comment. Your encouragement can make a difference for Tawney and others.
