Wheeler has a suspected portosystemic shunt (PSS), however doesn't have all the symptoms as well as some neurological symptoms.
With PSS and similar issues with livers, it is suspected that his liver doesn't properly filter out the ammonia produced by his body when digesting protein. Elevated levels of ammonia in the bloodstream basically poisons the brain and organs causing pain and neurological issues. Luckily, we have found a low protein food and medication routine that reduces these issues so Wheeler can live a happy life. This means Wheeler will be on medication, supplements and a special diet for the rest of his life.
Here are the basics on Wheeler: 11 month old neutered male, ~16 lbs, terrier mix, 95% housebroken, crate trained, gets along with dogs, cats and loves kids! Wheeler would actually do best with another dog as dogs (especially small-medium dogs) seem to really comfort him, but the other dog would need to be a calmer, non-reactive, playful dog that can sense when playing is too much. Even though he does do well with kids, even little ones, a quieter house with one child would seem to be best for him. He does also get a bit of separation anxiety so Wheeler's perfect home would be someone who is home more often than not. Wheeler is a typical terrier type so he does like to have his voice be heard, i.e. he barks!
A fenced in yard is required, as he does not do well with leashes and doesn't care really for standard walks. He does however like to go to parks to walk around slowly and take in the smells. He also loves to sit and nap in the sunshine.
Wheeler also loves cuddling on the couch and playing with toys.
Wheeler also has a bit of stranger danger and takes a little longer to warm up to new people. So a few longer meet and greets will be necessary so that Wheeler and potential adopters can get to know each other.
